Update on the J – July 17

MERCER ISLAND, Wash. (July 17, 2020) — Here we are in mid-July, the point at which we hoped to be able to reopen more portions of our building; specifically the fitness center, racquetball courts and locker rooms. Unfortunately, today King County is still in Phase 2 of the Safe Start Reopening Plan, which means restrictions remain in place on these recreation areas.

Further, on Tuesday Governor Inslee reported that the state of Washington would pause all further reopening until at least July 28. We will of course continue to track the status of that, and adjust our operations accordingly.

On the flip side, this has been one outstanding week at the Stroum Jewish Community Center! J-Cation—our revised summer camp experience—started on Monday. The 80 campers and 20 J-Cation staffers brought back the energy, smiling faces and traditions that make summers at the J so memorable. Together with ECS families and teachers, lap swimmers and small group fitness programs, energy is returning to the J and powering us to think about what lies ahead.

Like you, we are eager to bring people together in safe, friendly and meaningful ways—whether on-site or online. Check out below a list of what we have going at the J, and please stay tuned as we continue to adapt and innovate in this new reality.

Thank you for your ongoing support and partnership. Enjoy the sunshine, stay healthy, mask up and stay in touch!

Private/Semi-Private Swim Lessons

Starting July 27 — Register Now!

We’re excited to relaunch private and semi-private swim lessons starting July 27.

To maintain physical distancing, instructors may teach from the pool deck, use a flotation device in the water, or they may ask parents to assist their child in the water. Anytime an instructor is working directly with a student they will wear either a face mask or face shield. Additional information you need to know:

  • Lessons are 30 minutes long and will be available:
    • Monday-Thursday, 3-5:30 pm
    • Saturday-Sunday, 10-11:30 am
  • Semi-private lessons are limited to people from the same household.
  • Come dressed in your swimsuit; bring a towel, goggles, and water bottle. There is no towel service, and the locker rooms and water fountains are closed.
  • Only one adult is allowed in the building with a young swimmer.
  • All equipment will be sanitized after each lesson.

You can find pricing, registration information, and a full list of updated safety protocols here >>.
