Celebrate Jewish holidays and more with the J and our partners.
Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, marks the beginning of the Jewish High Holidays. Usually falling in September or early October, it begins a ten-day period of reflection and repentance. During this time, Jews take stock of their lives, prepare for the year ahead, and seek forgiveness from others.
One of the best-known rituals of Rosh Hashanah is the blowing of the shofar, an instrument traditionally made from a ramโs horn. Rosh Hashanah meals often include apples dipped in honey, symbolizing hopes for a sweet new year, and round challah, representing the continuing cycle of years and seasons.
Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, is the holiest day on the Jewish calendar. It is a day of fasting, prayer, reflection, and seeking forgiveness from God and others.
Following the High Holidays is the joyous holiday of Sukkot, a seven-day festival during which Jews traditionally dwell in a sukkah, an outdoor structure covered with branches and other natural materials. A sukkah is intentionally open to the outside, reminding us to welcome others and invite guests into our homes and communities. Sukkot also commemorates the Israelitesโ 40 years of wandering in the desert after the Exodus from Egypt.
Finally, at the end of Sukkot, we celebrate Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah. On Simchat Torah, Jews celebrate completing the annual cycle of Torah reading and immediately begin again with Genesis. Many communities celebrate by dancing with the Torah before reading the final and first portions.
