SJCC Reschedules Purim Carnival to April 26

The Stroum Jewish Community Center has decided to move its annual Purim Carnival, originally scheduled for this Sunday, March 8. The event will now take place on Sunday, April 26.

“The J’s annual Purim Carnival is a large community event that annually welcomes nearly 1,000 people into our building,” says SJCC Chief Executive Officer Amy Lavin. “The health and wellness of our entire community is our top priority, so we believe moving this event to a later date is the best choice for our community.”

Purim2Go Kits Available

To help families celebrate Purim (which begins at sundown on Monday, March 9, and ends at sundown on Tuesday, March 10), the J will offer take-home Purim2Go kits – complete with fun and tasty items for your family to have a festive celebration at home. Families are welcome to stop by one of the four Blazing Bagels locations on Monday and Tuesday between 8-10 am and 4-6 pm to pick up their Purim2Go kit. Thanks to Blazing Bagels for partnering with us to make Purim2Go happen. Locations include:

Kits will also be available on Monday and Tuesday at the following locations:

  • SJCC: 3801 E Mercer Way, Mercer Island – Monday & Tuesday All Day
  • A Ballard location (to be determined) – Date and time TBD

“Purim is a time to celebrate and we hope that families will take advantage of these fun Purim2Go kits to bring some of the festivities home,” Lavin says.

A “Second Purim” Celebration

Celebrating Purim later in the calendar actually has roots in Jewish tradition. “These celebrations, called ‘Second Purim,’ or Purim Katan, have historically been celebrated throughout the Jewish diaspora. You can read more about this tradition here. This year, we’re celebrating our own Purim Katan at the J! It will have many familiar attractions with a few twists and more connection to other family activities at the J,” Lavin says.

The Purim Katan Carnival will be part of a full day of family fun at the J on Sunday, April 26. The day’s events include the Early Childhood School’s annual Gardening Day and Mark Nizer 4D, an all-ages family variety show featuring outrageous comedy antics and expertly crafted juggling feats.

More details about Purim Katan coming soon.
