January SJCC Book Club: “Always Carry Salt”
Join us for the SJCC Book Club, a space for thoughtful reading, meaningful discussion, and connections across our SJCC community.
Our January Book Club pick is “Always Carry Salt: A Memoir of Preserving Language and Culture” by Samantha Ellis. Ellis, the daughter of Iraqi Jewish refugees, explores her endangered mother tongue, Judeo-Iraqi Arabic, and the traditions, stories, food, sayings and family history embedded within it. The memoir asks how culture can be preserved for the next generation without passing along all of the trauma of displacement.
