The Hanukkah story is filled with trials, tribulations, miracles, and triumphs. Seven years ago this week, my family and I had the privilege of doing an archaeological dig at a site in Israel where evidence of the Hanukkah story had been discovered years earlier. What an experience!
That opportunity brought this legendary tale to life. Being there evoked awe. The Hanukkah story relays a moment in history when the Jewish people faced challenges, and like so many times before prevailed with strength.
The Maccabeesโ story is inspiring, but the focus on light is what brings me the most joy at Hanukkah. Lighting the candles and watching them burn each night creates a moment to connect to our history and the present. It also invites us to pause and watch the light dance. Itโs mesmerizing at any age. In fact, maybe we could all pause and pass more time watching the flames move, and less time doom-scrolling. The former can give our minds time to wander.
These past few years, Iโve taken the opportunity to place our menorah in a window facing our street for passers-by to enjoy. The light is beautiful from inside the house and beyond. This can be just one little way to connect ourselves to our fellow Jews in Israel, who display menorahs in windows everywhere; the warm glow connecting us all.
Happy Hanukkah to everyone celebrating. May the glow of the light create warmth, entertainment, and connection to those near and far.
Warmly,

Amy Lavin, SJCC CEO
