SUMMARY:Chef Beejhy Barhany “Gursha” Cookbook + Tasting
DESCRIPTION:“Harlem’s queen of Ethiopian Jewish cuisine knows that the histories of Jews and Africans are inseparable” — The Forward \nBeejhy Barhany is the founding owner and executive chef of Tsion Cafe\, an Ethiopian and Israeli restaurant in Harlem’s historic Sugar Hill neighborhood. Born in Ethiopia and raised mostly in Israel\, she moved to New York in 2001 and in 2003 founded BINA Cultural Foundation\, a cultural organization dedicated to the empowerment of the Beta Israel (Ethiopian Jewish) community in the United States. Tsion Cafe is an Ethiopian Israeli fixture in New York City\, known for its tangy injera\, piquant shakshuka\, piping hot malawach anointed with pats of butter and rivulets of honey. It’s kosher fusion cuisine is pathbreaking and unique\, and a fan favorite. \nNamed for the Amharic word for “mouthful” and the practice of feeding those you love with your hands to their mouths\, “Gursha” is Barhany’s first cookbook. It begins with essays\, family stories\, and photos illustrating her childhood in Ethiopia and temporary stay in Sudan where her family had to hide their Jewishness but took risks to observe Shabbat fully\, and their ultimate\, hardwon entrance to Israel. \nThe cookbook’s mouthwatering recipes follow that journey and eras in her life\, from her childhood eating dabo bread to a taste for spices and sweets and yeasted doughs she developed as a young person new to Israela home she longed for as a girl but candidly discusses the exclusion and suspicion she faced as an Ethiopian arriving in Israel. Recipes range from classic Ethiopian classics like chickpea flour stew to Shabbat chicken dishes like doro wat and Israeli staples like babka and shakshuka. Most surprising are her desserts\, a decidedly unexpected combination of African American and Israeli styles fused with Ethiopian flavors. “Gursha” is a welcome reminder that Jewish food exists beyond hummus and matzo ball soup\, and celebrates the constant\, global fusion of flavors specific to each place Jews have called home. Barhany will serve audiences a taste of one of her favorite cake recipes to accompany the Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony. \n \nEthiopian coffee ceremony + tasting.\nAdditional cookbook sales and signing after the program. \nIn partnership with Jewish Book Council. \n\nSJCC Venue + Box Office Policies  \n\nALL SALES FINAL | NO REFUNDS | NO EXCHANGES | NO CREDITS\nGeneral admission | Doors open 30 min. before showtime.\nFacility and processing fees apply at checkout.\nPlease view our Welcome to the J webpage for the latest policies\, news\, and information.\nPatrons agree to all SJCC terms and conditions above and at SJCC Box Office + Venue Policies.\n\nNeed Help?\nContact BoxOffice@sjcc.org | 206-388-0833 (email best for a quick response!)\nVisit SJCC Arts + Ideas Box Office for full list of policies.

SUMMARY:Bone Health + Strength for Women
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the launch of our new Bone Density & Strength for Women on Sunday\, January 25 at noon. This program with and eye-opening kickoff session led by world-renowned nutrition. and strength expert Dr. Susan Kleiner. You hear the real data from Dr. Kleiner’s own bone-building journey—gaining bone density naturally from ages 64 to 68. \n\nResearch shows that women begin to lose bone density as early as their 30s\, often long before symptoms are noticeable. This program is for women interested in a preventive\, proactive approach—helping build and protect bone health before osteopenia or osteoporosis takes hold. \nThis class introduces women to the foundations of powerlifting-based strength training\, with a strong focus on squats\, deadlifts\, and other weight-bearing movements. If you are not yet thinking about your bone health\, it’s never too early to start strength training. \nThrough a thoughtful blend of strength training\, mobility work\, and balance exercises\, you’ll learn safe and effective techniques to support long-term bone and joint health. \nWho this class is designed for: \n\nWomen typically in their 30s–60s\nThose who want to prevent osteopenia or osteoporosis\nWomen who are new to strength training or have limited experience lifting heavier weight\n\nThis class includes strength training with movements like squats and deadlifts\, so it may not be a fit for everyone. If you have osteoporosis\, ongoing back or joint concerns\, balance or mobility challenges\, or have been advised to avoid heavier lifting\, please check with your healthcare provider or reach out—we’re happy to help you find the right option. \n \nSundays\n• Level 1 – Introductory/Beginner: 1 pm\n• Level 2 – Intermediate/Advanced: 2:15 pm \nNot sure which level is right for you or want to register early? Please contact Leslie Rubenstein at leslier@sjcc.org. \nClass Schedule \n\nFeb 1\nFeb 8 – No class due to Super Bowl\nFeb 15\nFeb 22\nMarch 1

SUMMARY:SJCC Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we launch a new SJCC Book Club\, a space for thoughtful reading\, meaningful discussion\, and connection across our SJCC community. \nOur first selection is “Hostage\,” by Eli Sharabi\, a powerful memoir by an Israeli man who spent 491 days in Hamas captivity in Gaza after being abducted from Kibbutz Be’eri during the October 7\, 2023\, attacks. In this raw\, personal account\, Sharabi describes the physical deprivation\, psychological terror\, and emotional devastation of captivity—alongside moments of courage\, faith\, and resilience. His book has become a bestseller in Israel and internationally\, and is one of the first full-length memoirs by a released hostage from this war. \n \nPlease note: Participants will need to purchase their own copy of the book. We recommend finishing the book before our meeting so you can fully join the discussion! \nContent Note: This book includes descriptions of violence\, captivity\, and bereavement. We will hold space gently and invite participants to care for themselves as needed (stepping out\, skipping certain sections\, etc.).

SUMMARY:CHEF | Rachel Simons\, “Sesame” Cookbook + Tasting
DESCRIPTION:A clear\, approachable guide to the world of sesame\, from halva\, tahini\, and sesame oil\, to gomasio and furikake\, with 80+ vegetarian-forward recipes by Simons and showcasing friends including Yotam Ottolenghi and Molly Yeh. \n \nSimons is the co-owner of the Seed + Mill shop in New York City’s Chelsea Market. “Sesame” aims to go further\, telling the story of the sesame seed’s “migration\, survival and adaptation\,” which is a kind of through-line for Simons\, who brings her multi-cultural upbringing to the cookbook. Her Jewish ancestors were expelled from their homes during the Spanish inquisition and fled to Czechoslovakia; after surviving the Holocaust\, they then left for Bulawayo\, Zimbabwe. Simons herself grew up in Australia before later moving to New York as an adult. \nThe sesame seed also has a long history\, dating back more than five thousand years to the Indian subcontinent\, where it was one of the first oilseed crops. Despite the sesame seed’s status as a well-known ingredient\, when opening Seed + Mill\, Simons and her co-founders wondered if this food category was a bit niche — even in a city as multicultural as New York. \nThe photography is beautiful\, and all the recipes feel simply designed and easy to execute–ranging from classic and variations on hummus and halva to reinvented classics like tahini tzimmes\, a dish traditionally served at Rosh Hashanah\, to international favorites such as ramen. \n“Sesame” is an excellent all-rounder\, equally suitable for experienced home cooks as for adventurous souls looking to try something new. \nCookbook sales signing and tasting after the show. \n \nIn partnership with Jewish Book Council.
