SUMMARY:AUTHOR TALK | Award-Winning Israeli Journalist Lee Yaron
DESCRIPTION:AUTHOR | Award-Winning Israeli Journalist Lee Yaron on “The Future of Israel – Hope and Resilience”   \nJoin us for an important presentation on “The Future of Israel – Hope and Resilience” with award-winning Israeli journalist Lee Yaron\, winner of the Jewish Book of the Year Award for her latest book “10/7: 100 Human Stories” and featured on Forbes’ coveted 30 Under 30 list for 2025. Moderated by Dr. Mika Ahuvia\, Associate Professor of Classical Judaism at UW. \nA radically passionate work of investigative journalism and political critique by the acclaimed “Haaretz” reporter\, “10/7: 100 Human Stories” is Yaron’s definitive account of the 10/7 attacks told through extensive interviews with survivors\, the bereaved\, and first responders. It profiles the diversity of victims and survivors: from left-wing kibbutzniks and music festival partiers to radical right-wingers\, from Bedouins and Israeli Arabs to Thai and Nepalese guest workers\, from peace activists and elderly Holocaust survivors to Ukrainian and Russian refugees. \nAt a time when people are seeking a deeper understanding of the history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and how internal political turmoil in Israel has affected it\, “10/7” takes a fresh approach\, offering answers through the stories of everyday people who lived tenuously on the border with Gaza. Rather than focusing on their last moments\, this award-winning book weaves together rich human stories with larger historical and political contexts. \n \nBook + virtual ticket bundle available (pickup or optional shipping available). Books ready for pickup before the event. \nSun\, May 3 @ 2:00 pm (Rescheduled from October 2025. Prior tickets have been transferred to the new date.)\nPresented via Zoom. Link shared 1 hour before showtime. \nPart of Chew on This! Speaker Series theme: Roots + Resilience. \nIn Partnership with Jewish Book Council. \n\nABOUT THE MODERATOR: Mika Ahuvia was born in Kibbutz Beit Hashita in northern Israel. Her scholarship bridges academic research and the lived experiences of Jewish communities. At the University of Washington\, where she is Associate Professor of Classical Judaism\, she guides students and community members into deeper engagement with Jewish history and tradition. As former Director of the Stroum Center for Jewish Studies\, she led the community through the aftermath of October 7\, mourning the loss of alumnus Hayim Katsman and coordinating learning opportunities for students\, faculty\, and university leadership. Ahuvia is the author of On My Right Michael\, On My Left Gabriel: Angels in Ancient Jewish Culture\, which recovers overlooked aspects of Jewish tradition. \n\nSJCC Virtual Event Details + Box Office Policies  \n\n ALL SALES FINAL | NO REFUNDS | NO EXCHANGES | NO CREDITS\n Ticket sales close and Zoom registration link emailed one (1) hour before showtime.\n Facility and ticket processing fees apply at checkout.\n Patrons agree to all SJCC terms and conditions above and at SJCC Box Office + Venue Policies.\n\nNeed Help?  \nContact BoxOffice@sjcc.org | 206-388-0833 (email best for a quick response!) \nVisit SJCC Arts + Ideas Box Office for full list of policies.

SUMMARY:Shane Burley + Ben Lorber\, Building “Safety Through Solidarity”
DESCRIPTION:How can we stand in solidarity with those seeking justice while also avoiding antisemitism? How do we resist those who seek to conflate the two? How do we forge coalitions across communities in order to overcome the politics of division and fear? Two activist journalists present a progressive\, intersectional approach to the vital question: “What can we do about antisemitism?” \n \nAntisemitism is on the rise today: from synagogue shootings by white nationalists\, to right-wing politicians and media figures pushing George Soros conspiracy theories. It’s clear that exclusionary nationalist movements are growing. By spreading division and fear\, they put Jews\, along with other marginalized groups and multiracial democracy itself\, at risk. \nAnd since the outbreak of war in Gaza\, debates around antisemitism have become more polarized and have higher stakes than ever. \nUsing personal stories\, historical deep dives\, frontline reporting\, and interviews with leading changemakers\, Burley and Lorber’s “Safety Through Solidarity: A Radical Guide to Fighting Antis-Semitism” helps us break the current impasse to understand how antisemitism works\, what’s missing in contemporary debates\, and how to build true safety through solidarity for Jews and all people. \n \nPart of the “Chew on This!” Speaker Series theme: Roots & Resilience. \nBook sales + signing after the program.   \nIn partnership with Jewish Book Council. \n\nABOUT:  \nShane Burley is a journalist based in Portland\, Oregon. He is the author or editor of four books on social movements\, including “Why We Fight: Essays on Fascism\, Resistance\, and Surviving the Apocalypse” (AK Press\, 2022). His work has been featured on NBC News and in The Baffler\, The Daily Beast\, Jewish Currents\, Haaretz\, and Yes! Magazine. \nBen Lorber is a Senior Research Analyst at Political Research Associates\, a social movement think tank\, where he studies and publishes on antisemitism and white Christian nationalism. Prior\, he worked supporting justice-driven young Jewish communities across the country and writes extensively on antisemitism\, Israel/Palestine\, and Jewish identity.  \n\nSJCC Venue + Box Office Policies  \n\nALL SALES FINAL | NO REFUNDS | NO EXCHANGES | NO CREDITS\nGeneral admission | Doors open 30 min. before showtime.\nFacility and processing fees apply at checkout.\nPlease view our Welcome to the J webpage for the latest policies\, news\, and information.\nPatrons agree to all SJCC terms and conditions above and at SJCC Box Office + Venue Policies.\n\nNeed Help?\nContact BoxOffice@sjcc.org | 206-388-0833 (email best for a quick response!)\nVisit SJCC Arts + Ideas Box Office for full list of policies.

SUMMARY:Sip + Story: The Recipes That Made Us
DESCRIPTION:Few things bring us together as universally as food—especially the recipes that have lived in our kitchens and families for generations. They offer a taste of our lived experience and a reflection of who we are\, often carrying rich ancestral stories passed down over time. \nJoin us for a relaxed\, social workshop—grab a drink\, come with a friend\, and connect with others as you explore the stories and traditions behind your meaningful recipes. \nLed by Ronit Plank\, this experience includes gentle\, thoughtful prompts to help you shape and write your own recipe-inspired memoir. We’ll share our stories\, connect with one another\, and reflect through memory\, intuition\, and storytelling. \nTogether\, we will memorialize these recipes and the histories behind them—creating something that can be passed down and shared for generations to come\, celebrating food as a love language and a lasting connection. \nPlease bring a recipe that holds personal meaning for you—feel free to bring a few options and choose one during the workshop. \nThis event is 21+. 1 drink and nosh provided. Additional drinks for purchase. \n \nHave questions about the event? Email info@sjcc.org. For help registering\, fill out this help form or email AccountSupport@SJCC.org. \n\nBio:\nRonit Plank is a writer\, teacher\, and editor whose work has appeared in The Atlantic\, Poets & Writers\, The Rumpus\, Hippocampus\, The New York Times\, and elsewhere\, earning Best of the Net\, Best Microfiction\, and multiple Pushcart Prize nominations. Her first book is the memoir When She Comes Back\, her second the short story collection Home is a Made-Up Place. She’s Creative Nonfiction Editor at The Citron Review\, teaches memoir widely including at the University of Washington’s Continuum Program\, and hosts the podcast Let’s Talk Memoir featuring interviews with memoirists about their creative process and writing life. SUMMARY:Schwartz Early Childhood School Parent Seminars
DESCRIPTION:Schwartz ECS Parent Education Series designed to strengthen family partnerships (currently enrolled and community) and deepen understanding of early childhood learning and development through a Reggio-inspired approach. \nThe virtual series will include several themed sessions led by members of the leadership team\, each addressing an area families frequently ask about and that directly supports our school philosophy: \nDec. 1 – Academics in a Reggio Classroom – Demonstrating how early literacy\, math\, and science concepts are integrated into play\, exploration\, and inquiry rather than taught through rote instruction. \nJan. 15 – Emotional Responsiveness and Challenging Behaviors – Offering tools for understanding the meaning behind behaviors\, building emotional regulation\, and supporting children through a compassionate\, connection-based approach. \nMarch 28 – Toilet Learning – Sharing respectful\, developmentally appropriate strategies that emphasize independence\, body awareness\, and collaboration between home and school. \nMay 20 – The Power of Play – Highlighting how play supports every area of development—social\, emotional\, cognitive\, and academic—and how it lays the foundation for lifelong learning. \nThe goal of this series is to empower parents with knowledge and confidence\, strengthen the partnership between home and school\, and communicate how the Reggio Emilia philosophy supports both academic readiness and whole-child development.
