Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find the right camp?

SJCC Summer Camp offers a variety of camps. Here are your first steps to find the best camp options for your family:

1. Look for your child’s grade for fall 2017.

2. Schedule your summer in the best way for your family: sign up for a single week or a three-week session. Join us all summer or whenever fits your schedule.

Do I have to be a member of the Stroum Jewish Community Center to attend SJCC Summer Camp?

You don’t have to be a J member to attend SJCC Summer Camp. However, membership does have its benefits, including discounted prices on all camps, swim lessons, and more. We offer a Summer Family Membership, good from Memorial Day to Labor Day for camp families who wish to join the J for the summer (see below for more details).

I'm not a J member; can I join for the summer?

Yes! If you are not a current SJCC member, your family can join the SJCC with a Summer Family Membership for just $219. Not only does joining the J get you discounts on SJCC Summer Camps (up to $100 off a three-week session), but it also allows your entire family to use the pool and gym facilities, and members over age 13 can participate in all our fitness classes and use the Fitness Center. A Summer Family Membership is good from Memorial Day 2017 through Labor Day 2017.

What is your cancellation policy?

If you cancel before May 1, 2017, you will receive a full refund minus a $50 administrative fee. If you cancel between May 1 and June 1, 2017, you will receive a 50% refund minus a $50 administrative fee. From June 1, 2017, until the end of camp (August 25, 2017), camp fees are not refundable.

If the SJCC cancels a camp for any reason, you will receive a credit or a full refund.

How do I pay for SJCC Summer Camp?

To reserve a place for your child at camp, payment must be received in full or through a three-month payment plan. In order to receive the early registration discount you must pay in full when you register for camp. All camp payments must be made by credit card. Monthly payments will be processed by credit card in equal amounts on March 1, April 1, and May 1.

Do you offer scholarships?

We are pleased to offer scholarships for families who want to attend SJCC Summer Camps. Please contact SJCC Summer Camp Registrar Beth Rosen or call 206-388-1995 for fee adjustments and scholarship information. Eligibility requirements must be met.

What is the First-Time Camper Discount?

New campers are eligible for a $150 per child discount for at least a three-week session. Funds are limited; register early. For more information contact SJCC Registrar Beth Rosen or call 206-388-1995.

Please note, we’ve given out all available first-time camper discounts for summer 2017.

I still have questions about camp registration, who do I contact?

Contact SJCC Summer Camp Registrar Beth Rosen or call 206-388-1995 if you have questions directly related to registration.

What is Curbside Drop-Off?

Between 9:15 and 9:30 a.m., staff members will be outside waiting by the curb, ready to greet campers and deliver them in to their respective camps. Our counselors will sign your camper into camp and make sure they get to their camp group. If you participate in curbside drop-off, please have your child ready to exit the car (with their backpack, lunches, etc., ready to go) when a staff person greets you. You are still welcome to park if you want to walk with your child into camp. For safety, please have your child exit on the passenger side of the car. Parents, please stay in the car. We also ask that your child remain in the vehicle if there is no staff member present.

Curbside drop off will not be available on the first day of summer camp: Monday, June 19. Curbside drop-off will be available every other day of the summer.

Do you offer Before and After Camp Care?

At the J, campers can enjoy a secure and familiar environment before and after their action-packed day at camp. Registration for this program must be made in advance. A $15 fee will be collected at time of service if child enters the afternoon care program without proper registration. The late pick-up charge is $1 per minute. This fee must be paid at time of service or will be automatically charged to your credit card. Morning and afternoon care is only available on a weekly basis.

Do you offer transportation to and from camp?

For the 2017 Summer Camp season, we are offering a number of transportation options. The price to use SJCC summer camp transportation service is $50 a week. For all of our routes, we have a limited number of spots, so please let us know if you want to reserve a spot.

What safety protocols are in place for field trips?

The safety and care of your children is our highest priority. Most of our camps include trips away from the SJCC. Buses are used for these activities. Every child is required to wear an SJCC camp t-shirt and bracelet that has our name and phone number on it. Field trip sites have been pre-screened by our staff.

What are SJCC Summer Camp's dietary restrictions?

All camp lunches must be vegetarian, dairy, or fish based. No meats are allowed at camp (pork, beef, chicken, turkey, etc.). Egg products are allowed. In addition all lunches and snacks must be nut-free. Please note, we do not offer refrigeration for lunches. We provide snacks of fresh vegetables or fruits in the afternoon.

Can my kids take swim lessons before or after camp?

Absolutely! Group, private, and semi-private swimming lessons are available before and after camp in the SJCC indoor pool.

What health and safety protocols are in place?

As a safety precaution, all children must be signed in every morning and signed out every afternoon. To sign out your camper, you will need to provide a photo identification and be on the camper’s list of authorized persons to pick up. This form is required for every camper in camp. Any other arrangements must be cleared by your child’s camp director.

All our staff is first-aid certified. Half of the camp day is spent outdoors, playing, swimming, and/or walking to and from activities. Counselors make sure children apply sunscreen throughout the day; please include sunscreen and a water bottle in your child’s backpack every day.

Who are your camp counselors?

The heart of SJCC Summer Camp is our dedicated and caring staff. Staff members are carefully selected for their experience, skills, and sensitivity with children. All staff members are required to participate in a training program. Our low camper-to-staff ratio ensures each camper receives personal attention and guidance during their camp experience.

The majority of our staff members spent their summers as SJCC Summer Camps campers before becoming counselors. Senior counselors have all completed at least one year of college; junior counselors are 11th or 12th graders who have successfully completed our pre-camp training programs.

What do I do if I have questions during the camp day?

Our counselors and supervisory staff members focus on the growth and learning of each child. In the months leading up to camp and during non-camp hours, the camp directors are available to answer questions as well as to discuss your child’s personal growth at the end of the camp session.

If you have questions during the camp day, please contact SJCC Summer Camp Administrator Lexie Jones via email or at 206-388-0828.

How will I receive information about SJCC Summer Camps?

Every Thursday, we’ll send an email update to families about their upcoming week of camp, with schedules, field trips, and other important information. If you don’t receive an email, please contact Josh Niehaus
