Are you ready for a summer J-Cation? J-Cation is a brand new, fun-filled program for pre-k through 5th graders! This will replace all previously scheduled J Camp sessions for summer 2020. However, just like those, it will continue to include days full of fun, friendship, and fast-paced activity! Similar to our traditional Camp Kef and Camp Katan, at J-Cation, your kids will enjoy outdoor activities, swimming, arts and crafts, music, and more.
This broad overview of J-Cation will address our most commonly asked questions. We’ll continue to update the information in the coming weeks.
Can I transfer my summer 2020 J Camp registration into J-Cation?
Yes! If you are currently registered for summer J Camp, please email Account Services Manager Beth Rosen to roll your current registration into J-Cation. You will receive a confirmation email once the change has been processed.
Please note that J-Cation is currently only set up for campers entering Pre-K through 5th grade. For questions or concerns regarding this, please contact Dave Flagler.
Can I register my child for J-Cation if they weren’t previously registered for summer J Camp?
Absolutely! You can register here.
Do I have to be a member of the Stroum Jewish Community Center to attend J-Cation?
You don’t have to be a J member to attend J-Cation. However, membership does have its benefits, including discounted prices on all camps, programs, and more. Learn more >>
What are the registration fees?
J-Cation costs $375 per week for members and $415 per week for guests.
We are taking enhanced and additional measures to ensure that our camp areas remain clean, sanitized throughout the day, and deep-cleaned during the evening. A $25 cleaning fee is included in your J-Cation registration to defray some of the additional costs of these safety measures.
What is your refund and cancellation policy?
In recognition of the fluidity of the pandemic, we’re allowing cancellations up to 7 days before the start of each week of J-Cation. In the event that the SJCC cancels or is unable to open J-Cation for any specific week, you will receive a full refund for that session.
Can I request that my child be grouped with a friend?
If you would like your child grouped with a friend, please email us at least 7 days before the start of the session. Requests cannot be guaranteed, but we will do our best to honor mutual requests.
What do we need to do before coming to J-Cation?
Before J-Cation begins, you are required to upload the necessary forms and ensure that your information is correct and up to date in your CampMinder account.
If you have any specific concerns about starting J-Cation, anxieties, particular behaviors, recent medical conditions or allergies not already listed on your child’s medical forms, special instructions, or social dynamics we should be aware of, please contact Camp Director Dave Flagler or Assistant Camp Director Joel Jacobs. We want to be proactive with you to address any issues or concerns beforehand to create the best experience for your child.
I still have registration questions, who do I contact?
Contact Camp Director Dave Flagler or Account Services Manager Beth Rosen or call 206-388-1995 if you have questions directly related to registration.
What to Expect at J-Cation
When will J-Cation begin?
Our current plan is to open J-Cation on Monday, July 13. If this changes for any reason, we will share that information as soon as possible.
What do we need to bring to J-Cation every day?
- Lunch and snacks (vegetarian and nut-free)
- Mask or appropriate face covering
- Closed-toe shoes
- Sunscreen (preferably in a zipped bag)
- Water bottle
- Change of clothes
Please label everything with your child’s name in permanent marker.
Is there anything that we shouldn’t bring to J-Cation?
Please do not bring toys, electronics, or anything else from home. We do not want children sharing anything with each other that is not provided by and regularly sanitized by the SJCC.
What are J-Cation’s dietary restrictions?
All camp lunches and snacks must be vegetarian, dairy, or fish-based. No meat is allowed at camp (pork, beef, chicken, turkey, etc.). Egg products are allowed. In addition, all lunches and snacks must be nut-free. Please note, we do not offer refrigeration for lunches.
What is the daily schedule for J-CATION?
J-Cation will start at 9:30 am and go until 3:30 pm, Monday through Friday. Morning drop-off is from 9:00-9:30 am and afternoon pick-up is from 3:30 to 4:00 pm. More on that below.
Will my child get to swim?
Yes, but not every day. Only two camp groups will be allowed in the pool at the same time, and the groups will be separated by lane ropes. All children will be given a swim test at the beginning of their first session. Once a child passes the swim test, they will not need to retake it. If a child does not pass, they will be required to wear a life jacket but will be able to retest at various points throughout the summer.
Even if children don’t plan to swim, we still recommend bringing a bathing suit every day as sometimes there is other fun water play.
Will children go boating?
Boating is permitted on our waterfront provided we have a signed parental waiver on file. Children must wear a life jacket at all times and adhere to lifeguard instructions.
Who are your camp counselors?
The heart of all J Kids programs is our dedicated and caring staff. Staff members are carefully selected for their experience, skills, and sensitivity with children. All staff members are required to participate in a training program. The majority of our staff members spent their summers as J Camp campers before becoming counselors. Our low camper-to-staff ratio ensures each camper receives personal attention and guidance during their camp experience.
Morning Drop-Off/Afternoon Pick-Up Procedures
What are the procedures for morning drop-off?
Morning curbside drop-off will run daily from 9:00-9:30 am. Due to the limited size of our parking lot, we ask that you arrive within the following time windows according to the first letter of your last name.
- A-I: 9:00-9:10 am
- J-R: 9:10-9:20 am
- S-Z: 9:20-9:30 am
Upon arrival, parents will pull up to one of a number of unloading stations. At the stations, SJCC staff will check your child’s temperature and do a health assessment. If there are no COVID-19-related health concerns after the assessment, the staff member will escort the child into our facility to wash their hands and join their group. We ask that all parents and campers wait until arriving at the unloading station and remain in their cars until greeted by SJCC staff.
Please note that based on the results of a visual assessment, health assessment, or temperature check, your child might be denied entry into camp on a given day. The camp director will follow up with you if that is the case. It is better to remain overly cautious and vigilant as opposed to taking any chances.
Afternoon curbside pick-up will run daily from 3:30-4:00 pm. Due to the limited size of our parking lots, we ask that you arrive within the following time windows according to the first letter of your last name.
- A-I: 3:30-3:40 pm
- J-R: 3:40-3:50 pm
- S-Z: 3:50-4:00 pm
As you pull near the building, an SJCC staff member will ask who you are picking up and radio to the child’s camp group. You will proceed to a loading station. Once parked, our staff will check your identification (to ensure you are on the child’s approved pick-up list), and sign the child out of camp. During this process, SJCC staff will bring the child to your car, and help them (as needed) get into the vehicle and fasten their seatbelts. We ask that you stay in the car during this time.
What do I do if I have questions during the camp day?
Our counselors and supervisory staff members focus on the growth and learning of each child. In the months leading up to camp and during non-camp hours, the camp directors are available to answer questions as well as to discuss your child’s personal growth at the end of the camp session.
If you have questions during the camp day, please contact J-Cation Administrator at 206-388-1991 or email them at CampAdmin@sjcc.org.
You can also contact Camp Director Dave Flagler and Assistant Camp Director Joel Jacobs. Please note, the camp directors are generally away from their desks during the camp day; please allow at least 24 hours for a response. If it is an urgent or time-sensitive matter, please contact the J-Cation Administrator to receive a prompt response.
How will I receive information about J-Cation?
By the end of every week, families will receive an update about their upcoming week of camp with reminders and other important information. If you don’t receive an email, please contact us.
You can also stay up-to-date by joining our J Camp + J Kids Facebook group.
