For families at home, a new way for young kids to stay connected
Virtual program for children ages 4-6
The SJCC Early Childhood School is proud to offer a virtual learning experience designed to support your child’s intellectual curiosity, emerging literacy and math skills, as well as their ongoing need for social and emotional connections. The curriculum will be Reggio Emilia/constructivist inspired – fostering empathy, compassion, and curiosity about the world. Taught by longtime Early Childhood School teacher, Emily Jane Schankerman, lessons will be presented as projects and games and include early literacy, math, science, cooking, interactive storytime, and more.
About Emily Jane
Emily Jane has worked in ECS since 2011 in the 2s, 3s, and 4s Programs. Her previous experience includes nine summers at Camp Thunderbird and teaching outdoor education on Cape Cod. She has spent many summers at the SJCC helping lead and direct camps, ranging from Camp Katan to Cooking Camp. Emily Jane holds a degree in elementary education from Bradley University. She also earned her Masters of Science Education from UW and has a certification in Environment Education and Community from IslandWood on Bainbridge Island. She has also attended multiple national conferences on Early Childhood Education. When she is not teaching, Emily Jane loves arts and crafts, photography, playing pinball, thrift shopping, gardening, hiking, and biking.
Infusing Jewish Values
As with all ECS classes, Jewish values, culture, and traditions will be naturally integrated into the classroom’s activities. We’ll celebrate Shabbat and Havdalah every week. Children in this class will also receive beautiful holiday learning boxes from Days. Boxes will be delivered to your house, so children can explore them together as Emily Jane leads them through activities to enhance the experience of Jewish holidays.
Virtual Preschool will run Monday, October 5, 2020, through Wednesday, June 16, 2021. The class will meet virtually on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, from 1-2 pm, with an in-person session twice a month for each half of the class on Tuesdays from 1-2 pm in the SJCC’s Kesher Community Garden. While the in-person sessions are for the children, parents are welcome to stay outside at our outdoor J Cafe to enjoy a coffee and get to know one another.
The Virtual Preschool program costs $225 per month and runs for 9 months. We will accept a maximum of 10 children to allow for a meaningful interactive experience for each child.
