Full Film Details:
Ever wonder how Israelis perceive American Jews? Guri Alfi, Israel’s most popular comedian and TV personality, takes us on a hysterical, four-episode journey highlighting the entertaining cultural and political rifts between Jews living in the United States and Israelis. In the summer of 2018, Alfi and his family moved to the US. Like many Israelis abroad, he found himself experiencing an identity crisis, questioning what his Jewishness looked like outside of the Jewish state. The series follows Alfi as he embarks on a journey across North America, exposing viewers to some of the most vibrant and creative expressions of Jewish identity and Judaism today through the lens of his razor-sharp, often sarcastic wit. He explores the core differences and two models of “New Jews” in the 20th century: the Israeli sabra and the American Jew. “Are we still one people?” he wonders, at a time when the relationship between American Jewry and the State of Israel has reached an unprecedented low. THE NEW JEW addresses this chasm with humor in a compelling and entertaining way. This series received rave reviews from Israeli television critics, generated public conversation about Israel’s relationship to pluralistic Judaism in the US, and provides an opportunity to reflect on American Jews and their ties to modern-day Israel.
