Full Film Details:
Fall 2021 marked the fiftieth anniversary of FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, the film Pauline Kaek of “The New Yorker” called “the most powerful movie musical ever made.” Narrated by Jeff Goldblum, this richly detailed documentary captures the humor and drama of the unusual and untold story of director Norman Jewison’s quest to recreate the lost world of Jewish life in Tsarist Russia and re-envision an epic, cinematic version of the beloved Broadway hit. Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Daniel Raim puts audiences in the director’s chair through behind-the-scenes footage, never-before-seen photos, and storyboards from the early 1970s. Recent interviews with Jewison, film critic Kenneth Turan, composers, cast, and crew (including Tevye himself, star Chaim Topol) reveal how actors created their roles, how music and dancing were integrated, and how the experience of making FIDDLER ON THE ROOF impacted the lives and revived the souls of its non-Jewish director, the actors, and audiences alike.
