Full Film Details:
Popular French actress, screenwriter, and composer Aurélie Saada makes her directorial debut with this life-affirming reminder that it’s never too late to find love and seek fulfillment. Legendary French actress Françoise Fabian (Luis Bunuel’s BELLE DE JOUR and Eric Rohmer’s MY NIGHT AT MAUD’S) stars as a recent widow whose sorrow gives way to a deep thirst for life. Much to the discomfort of her three loving but dysfunctional children, Rose gradually rejects societal pressures to “act her age” and fade into peaceful oblivion. This warm-hearted Parisian family drama is steeped in the director’s love for her Sephardic-Ashkenazic Jewish roots—from the music (a treasure trove of Yiddish and Mizrahi songs, all written by her) to the food (the credits even include a recipe for “makroudh,” a date-filled cookie). The protagonist’s Tunisian origins are steeped in tradition and central to the specificity of the Sephardi diaspora within France. Winner of the Variety Piazza Grande Award at the 2021 Locarno Film Festival.
