SUMMARY:EXHIBIT | HYPHEN: Graphic Novels of Jewish Diversity
DESCRIPTION:Explore Jewish diversity through “HYPHEN: Jewish Stories in Our Own Words\,” a graphic novel exhibit featuring stories of identity\, immigration and belonging. Join graphic novelist and co-creator Julian Voloj on Nov. 1 for a special reception and conversation about his work on HYPHEN as executive director of Be’chol Lashon\, a nonprofit devoted to uplifting the historic and contemporary racial\, ethnic and cultural diversity of the Jewish people. \nThe vibrant new graphic novel anthology + exhibit\, HYPHEN: JEWISH STORIES IN OUR OWN WORDS\, celebrates ethnic and racial diversity within the Jewish community through the art of graphic novels\, with deeply personal stories from Laos\, Japan\, Uganda and around the world about immigration\, trailblazing\, traumas and culturally different Jewish experiences. Each story is told in their own words and uniquely illustrated by a roster of acclaimed international artists. From ancient traditions to modern journeys\, these voices reflect the true diversity of the Jewish experience today. \nThe stories in HYPHEN are about immigration and information hidden from children\, stories of trauma\, the experience of being a refugee. In matching storytellers and artists\, the editors tried to find Jewish artists\, initially\, but that wasn’t always possible\, especially given tight deadlines. However\, fortuitous links happened. For example\, the editors knew of an Italian-African artist who wanted to work with a black storyteller\, so paired them with Shoshanna\, the trailblazing first female rabbi of Uganda’s Abayudaya community. \nFree Registration/Drop In + Book Sales: \n\nOct. 12-Dec. 6: Exhibit on view for drop-ins during regular SJCC business hours with onsite front-desk registration (best after preschool hours to view all five story panels).\nNov. 1: Opening Reception registration required.\n\n \nABOUT: Speaker/Graphic Novelist/Curator Julian Voloj\nBorn in Germany to Colombian parents\, Voloj is the executive director of Be’chol Lashon\, an organization dedicated to celebrating ethnic and racial diversity within the Jewish community. Voloj is the author of several graphic novels. He and co-editor Sapolsky\, a French-American artist and writer with both Ashkenazi and Sephardic roots and the co-creator of “Spider-Man Noir\,” have chosen comics as their medium because it is limitless and cinematic. \n  \nInteractive! Everyone is invited to draw their own graphic story panel and contribute to the ‘s diverse story of our J community in the J Cafe. \nPart of SJCC Blueprint for Belonging.

SUMMARY:MUSIC | Jewish Country Music Artist: Joe Buchanan + The Family Band
DESCRIPTION:Jewish country music artist Joe Buchanan and his band deliver a boot-stomping\, backyard boogying joyous evening of country ballads\, connection\, healing and celebration. Featuring line dancing with Seattle’s Boot Boogie Babes. \n \nJewish Country Music: What Now? Texas-born and river-raised\, Joe Buchanan makes country music that is steeped in Jewish spirituality and steeped in Torah. Grounded in the idea that there is always room at the table\, his music highlights the values\, faith and history of the Jewish people—stories about struggles and triumphs of the human spirit. \nRaised with one foot in Houston and the other in the Texas Hill Country\, Buchanan grew up swinging off ropes on the Frio River and spending time like any kid—trying to figure out what was what. About 13 years into his marriage\, his wife discovered she was Jewish and their family started down a path of that changed everything. In the ten years since his conversion\, this Jewish country artist from Houston\, TX\, truly found his voice. After joining the Tribe\, Buchanan released his debut album\, Unbroken\, and in 2020 his second\, Back From Babylon. Info: joebuchananmusic.com \nNew Album “Heaven & Earth”: Why make this music now? “One of the most incredible things about making music has been how folks have opened up about their struggles in faith\, relationships or their Jewish experience\, and how a song or a service helped them find some healing\,” says Buchanan. His new album\, Heaven and Earth\, is heavily inspired by the joy of being together and in those quiet moments where we find connection to others\, to a higher being and to ourselves. Plus: it’s simply great country music to listen to and dance to in your backyard with good friends—songs that open doors to celebration. \n  \nFeaturing Boot Boogie Babes Line Dance Lesson + Performance: Seattle’s Boot Boogie Babes have choreographed a line dance to “Good Times\,” a feature track on Buchanan’s new album (see instruction videos below)—so everyone will be ready to boogie with them in their seats during their performance. Get ready for your boot-stomping\, honkey-tonk\, flash-mob moment! SUMMARY:CHEF TALK + TASTING | PBS star Pati Jinich\, "Foods of La Frontera" Cookbook Event
DESCRIPTION:Fresh off  winning  two 2026 James Beard Media Awards for her longtime PBS TV shows “Pati’s Mexican Table” and “La Frontera with Pati Jinich\,” her induction into the Broadcast Media Hall of Fame and two Daytime Emmy nominations\, chef\, TV host and New York Times bestselling cookbook author Pati Jinich joins us for an unforgettable evening discussing and tasting recipes from her latest cookbook\, “Foods of La Frontera: Recipes and New Taste Frontiers from Both Sides of the Border.” \nIn addition to exploring her own Jewish-Mexican roots\, border stories and family recipes\, Jinich shares segments from her new PBS primetime docuseries “PanAmericana” about the crypto or “hidden” Jews of Albuquerque\, New Mexico\, with whom she helped prepare a communal Shabbat dinner drawn from Sephardic traditions. \nJinich’s Jewish identity has been shaped in large part by how her grandmothers wove their Jewish heritage from the countries they came from with their new home in Mexico and the idea that identity is something people carry\, adapt and express through everyday life\, especially through food. So now\, as a Jewish-Mexican woman living in the United States\, Jinich finds herself continuing to weave those identities together in a vibrant\, ever-changing and evolving way. For her\, Judaism is deeply tied to family\, memory and the act of gathering and Mexico gave her a sense of flavor\, warmth and creativity. The United States has given Jinich a place to share those stories and connections broadly.  These identities are not separate—they enrich one another and shape how Jinich cooks\, tells stories and how she understands border cultures and where she comes from. \nModerated by Rachel Belle\, the creator/host of “Your Last Meal\,” a James Beard Award finalist for best podcast\, host of the Emmy-nominated Cascade PBS TV show “The Nosh with Rachel Belle” where she is also an editor-at-large and author of the cookbook “Open Sesame.” \n  \n  \n  \n \nChef Talk\, Episode + Tasting.\nCookbook purchase required (household companion tickets available). \nAdditional book sales + signing after the event. \nPart of Chew on This! Speaker Series theme: Blueprint for Belonging.  \nView policies\, terms + conditions on our  SJCC Box Office + Venue Policies  page.
