Back in January, 17-year-old Mercer Island High Schooler Avi Schiffman noticed a lot of misinformation and panic about the coronavirus and thought, “I can do better than the government.” So the avid gamer, who taught himself to code from YouTube videos at age seven, built a one-stop-shop COVID-19 tracking website filled with local and global statistics and an outbreak map. Millions of views later, his ingenuity and propitious timing building the largest coronavirus tracking website in the world has been featured on The Today Show, The New Yorker, Geekwire, The Times of Israel, and on podcast interviews around the world. His website accepts donations for “a cup of coffee” but he just turned down an eight million dollar offer to accept advertising. No wonder this whiz kid with a strong moral compass was just invited to speak at the UN General Assembly.
