Virtual SJCC Series: Two Paths to One God

January 20 @ 7:00 pm - 8:45 pm

Virtual Event
Two Paths Conversation

Due to power outages on Mercer Island on Jan 13, this series will now begin on Jan. 20.

In response to the growth of antisemitism in our local community of Mercer Island, Wash., and globally throughout the nation, we decided to address the historic Christian-Jewish relationship in all of its complexity. Join us to start 2021 with this five-part #Virtual SJCC series “Two Paths to One God: Christians and Jews in Conversation.” This conversation will be led by Reverend Elizabeth Riley, Rector, Emmanuel Episcopal Church, and Rabbi Jay Rosenbaum, Rabbi Emeritus Herzl-Ner Tamid Congregation.

Join us for this thought-provoking series!

Christians and Jews in Conversation
“Two Paths to One God: Jews and Christians Exploring Holy Difference” with Rev. Elizabeth Riley and Rabbi Jay Rosenbaum
Fifty years ago, the Christian world revolutionized its relationship with the Jewish people by rejecting the teaching of contempt, the belief that Jews were to be blamed for the death of Jesus. In our age of polarization, the profound transformation of Jewish-Christian relations can serve as a model for all of us.

  • How did this great change come about?
  • What led to the teaching of contempt in the first place?
  • What are common misconceptions Christians and Jews have of each other?
  • What is the work we still have to do to create a more compassionate relationship?
  • How can a deepening understanding between Jews and Christians create opportunities for us to work together to build a better world?

More about the speakers:

The Rev. Elizabeth Riley is an Episcopal priest and has been the rector of Emmanuel Church on Mercer Island since 2018. She was born and raised in Alaska and grew up in an interfaith family where both Judaism and Christianity were practiced, and interfaith relations, especially Jewish-Christian relations, have therefore been a focus for her ministry. She has a Master of Divinity from Church Divinity School of the Pacific in Berkeley and was ordained in 2013. She lives on Mercer Island with her husband and three children.

Rabbi Jay Rosenbaum is Rabbi Emeritus of Herzl-Ner Tamid Congregation in Mercer Island, WA after serving 17 years as HNT’s senior rabbi. As a congregational rabbi for 39 years, he has often been called upon to bring together people with opposing agendas. Rabbi Rosenbaum has devoted his life’s energy to making peace between ancient texts with modern sensibilities. He believes that if you can close the gap between two ideas, you can overcome the barriers between two human beings. For the past three years, he has concentrated on deepening understanding between the Black and Jewish communities, Muslims and Jews, Christians and Jews, and Israeli Jews and American Jews.
