About the Film: SOUL
What is it that makes you…YOU? Joe Gardner (voiced by Jamie Foxx), a middle-school band teacher gets the chance of a lifetime to play at the best jazz club in town. But one small misstep takes him from the streets of New York City to “The Great Before” – a fantastical place where new souls get their personalities, quirks, and interests before they go to Earth. Determined to return to his life, Joe teams up with a precocious soul, named 22 (voiced by Tina Fey) who has never understood the human experience. As Joe desperately tries to show 22 what’s so great about living, he discovers the answers to his own life’s most important questions.
From the director of UP and INSIDE OUT and in true Disney and Pixar fashion, the magic of SOUL is how it tackles complicated, adult themes in a way that both adults, teens, and children can enjoy together and relate to in their own way. As the title suggests, this is a movie about laying a soul bare. Ultimately, the inexpressible joy of the movie is irresistible.
Directed by Academy Award® winner Pete Docter (INSIDE OUT and UP) and co-directed by Kemp Powers (ONE NIGHT IN MIAMI). Composer Jon Batiste (“The Late Show with Stephen Colbert”) won the 2021 Academy Award® for Best Original Score.
Animated Feature | 110m | US 2021 | English | Rated PG (rec age 7+)
