For five decades, legendary French mime artist Marcel Marceau entertained and touched audiences around the globe and inspired entire generations of artists, from the famous Swiss clown Dimitri, who was part of his company, to David Bowie and Kate Bush. In THE ART OF SILENCE, the first documentary film about his life, we meet the complex, compassionate artist and family man behind the white-painted mask. The son of a Strasbourg kosher butcher, as a teenager Marceau eluded capture by the Nazis through mime; he later joined the French Resistance and helped save hundreds of Jewish children. This revelatory film, filled with archival images and footage, and intimate testimonials by protégés and family members, traces Marceau’s long history, career, and artistic journey which was informed by his traumatic experiences during World War II.
Director Bio
Maurizius Staerkle Drux works as a filmmaker and sound artist. His prior films include DIE BÖHMS: ARCHITEKTUR EINER FAMILIE (CONCRETE LOVE, 2014) and the short BUNGA (2012). Born in Cologne, Germany, and raised in Zürich, his work in film, sound, and sign language led to making this film. His works have won several international prizes including the prestigious Goethe Prize at the International Film Festival in Leipzig. Since 2017, he has been a member of the European Film Academy and is a lecturer at the University of Zürich. View official bio on IMDB.
