More on THE THE MAN IN THE BASEMENT (L’homme de la Cave)

Philippe Le Guay | Narrative Thriller | France | 2021 | French w/English subtitles | 114m | PG-13

In this gripping psychological thriller, a benign real estate deal turns into a sinister and suspenseful standoff between a bourgeois French couple and a dangerous stranger. When a Parisian architect (Jérémie Renier) and his wife (Bérénice Bejo, THE ARTIST) sell their apartment’s unused storage cellar to a well-mannered former history teacher (François Cluzet), the stranger’s secret life as an antisemitic conspiracy theorist and Holocaust denier emerges after he takes up residence. As the couple struggles to rescind the sale, their increasingly menacing buyer insinuates himself into their lives and that of their naive teenage daughter, turning the family’s idyllic world upside down. Provocative and superbly acted, this nightmare scenario (based on a true story) will keep audiences guessing from one unsettling moment to the next. THE MAN IN THE BASEMENT intelligently explores France’s hidden history of antisemitism through compelling and suspenseful storytelling.
