Seattle Jewish Theater Company, “Mississippi Summer”
November 12 • 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
When two idealistic Jewish volunteers travel to Mississippi in 1965 to fight for civil rights, a heroic Tacoma lawyer, outspoken local rabbi, and dynamic Black leader must defend them when they’re jailed by local police.
Based on actual events, Art Feinglass’s new play explores this turbulent time of violent arrests, bloody beatings, and bombings by local forces to preserve segregation.
The events of that summer had a profound effect on American life, giving momentum to the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and the birth of the Black Power movement. “Mississippi Summer” also explores the idealism that initially united the civil rights movement of the early ‘60s and the later realities that changed everything.
Talkback with the playwright and cast after the show, moderated by Rabbi Kate Speizer of Endless Opportunities. Coffee, tea, and refreshments served.

About the Playwright
Local playwright and artistic director Art Feinglass was a young civil rights volunteer who went to Jackson, Mississippi, in 1965 to work on the voter registration campaign and the struggle to end segregation. He and fellow workers at the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) were beaten and jailed by police for their activities. “Mississippi Summer” is based on his personal experiences and the journal he kept at the time.
