Osher at the J: Black Holes are (Almost) Out of Sight (Lecture)

Astronomers have known for a long time that black holes exist in two forms. One is a stellar black hole that is the end point of evolution for some of the most massive stars. The other form is a black hole at the center of most massive galaxies, including our own galaxy The Milky Way. Recently astronomers have been able to image the vicinity of the black hole at the center of a distant galaxy using a group of radio telescopes. Come learn about astronomical black holes, what they can (and can’t) do and the part they play in the universe.
Speaker: Julie Lutz
Research Professor of Astronomy Emerita at UW, Julie has loved astronomy ever since her father showed her the constellations in the dark skies of Hawaii in the early 1950s. As a Professor at Washington State University (28 years) and UW (20 years and counting), she has been teaching astronomy courses and doing research on stellar evolution.
*Please feel free to bring your own lunch from 12-12:30 to lunch and mingle before the talk begins at 12:30 PM.
