The Jewish Touch

The Jewish Touch: Exploring the Cultural Connection of Jews and the Arts

"The Jewish Touch" series has evolved from the "Opera Sings the Soul" lectures, which focused on opera and its cultural connection to Jewish singers, composers and themes. The new wave of lectures will go beyond opera to address a larger variety of topics and themes. The SJCC will bring a variety of speakers to the new series with a goal to engage the community through discussions on various cultural topics of interest to the Jewish people. The following lectures will take place this fall.

The mission and goal of the Stroum JCC "The Jewish Touch: Exploring the Cultural Connection of Jews and the Arts" lecture series is to provide educational and cultural enrichment for the Jewish and general community in the greater Seattle area by exploring the cultural connection and heritage of Jews to music, theater, film and other art forms and their creators. Each lecture will feature a prominent speaker and audio/visual materials.

Love, Sex, Death and the Meaning of Life

Sunday, October 10, 4 p.m.

Do you have to be Jewish to "get" Woody Allen? What is particularly "Jewish" about his humor, philosophy and world view?
Through clips from Woody Allen's films and reference to Jewish literary and comic traditions, from the novels of Philip Roth and Saul Bellow to the standup comedy of the
Borscht Belt, Prof Hirsch will attempt to answer these challenging questions.  Discussion and clips from "Annie Hall," "Manhattan," "Hannah and Her Sisters," and "Crimes and Misdemeanors" will provide the central focus of Allen's wit and wisdom.
